Berkheimer Rings in the New Year and Sends it Like Never Before

Yeah, it is the 4th of February and this is about a New Year’s occasion, but I think you’ll still enjoy it none the less. Mr. Romance Nate Berkheimer flew his sweet little girlfriend Ashley to the Big Apple to ring in the New Year and for another occasion too. We’ll let Nate tell the story for himself so you’ll better understand why I’ll now be referring to him as “Mr. Romance”.

Enjoy, Trevor

Here’s Nate…

Back in September I started planning a trip to go to New York City for New Years. I had always wanted to go, and Ash had never been to the upper east coast. By November 1st, I had plane tickets, hotel, and all kinds of plans… and Ash, she had no idea. I told her family and most of her friends that I was taking her out there to bring in the New Year, and they all helped keep it a secret. All she knew was that I was taking her somewhere after Christmas because she had the days off from work.

As Christmas was getting closer, money was getting tighter; she was thinking we were going somewhere close like California or Arizona. Plane tickets were outta the question. On Christmas, her big “open me last” present, was all the NY stuff. I had a cardboard box, 12in by 12in and 6in tall. I made a plywood box to fit inside of it, so when it was empty, weighed about 5 lbs. On a layover in NYC in November, I got all sorts of tour guides, postcards, magnets, etc. All of that stuff was in the box along with some plane tickets to NYC. She opened the box, stared inside for a minute, and then went crazy. I had never seen her so surprised in the 3 years we’ve known each other. It made Christmas!

Five days later, December 30th, we were off to NYC. We had 5 days and 4 nights in the big city ahead of us. We are both born and raised in Vegas, used to all the bright lights, but New York is another story. When we first stepped foot into Times Square, we just looked at each other amazed. Our first day there was pretty mellow. 75 bucks taxi fare from the airport to the hotel was a bummer! It was more like a thrill ride with the way this guy drove. The next day was new years eve, we went in to the city, checked out some sights, had some pizza of course, then headed back to the hotel around 5pm. We were back near Times Square around 10pm.

Taxi! We have 75 dollars!

We met up with some friends from out west that just happened to be out there too. Around 11pm I called a buddy of mine, good dude to know in NYC on New Years. He’s a NYPD Sgt, been with them for ages. He escorted us right up to the front of Times Square about 20 yards back from where the ball dropped. We were lucky! I had never been in a place with that many people screaming their heads off. The ball dropped, a billion pieces of confetti landed on us, we yelled and whoooo’d a little bit, then got outta there before it was too late.

Here’s a shot Nate took of the ball on its way down. I wanted to have a DB logo up there, but Toshiba came in with a much better offer.

The next couple of days we were total tourists. It was awesome. I had never been on an actual vacation with no bike or family with me. Just me and Ash, our first of many! I saved the biggest surprise for the last day we were there. We went to Central Park and took a ride through it on a horse and carriage. It was really nice! That isn’t a park, it’s huge! After the carriage ride, we took a walk through part of the park, and then came across this really nice area. There was a bench that overlooked a small lake. We were hangin out, takin some pictures together, and then when the time was right, I made my move! Yep, I popped the big question. I had never been so nervous in my life, but she said YES! Screamed it! And now we are officially engaged. It’s a great feeling. So April of 2010, we’ll tie the knot. Until then, just a whole lot of BMX! Summer isn’t too far away, and you better believe I’m doing the Dew Tour again in 09!

This one horsepower ride was a far cry from the Mazdarati zoom zoom Nate usually drives, but I’m sure the adrenaline involved was about the same. Congratulations you two!

Thanks a lot Nate. My wife used to think I was romantic. Wait a minute; that may have been someone else…

Thanks for stopping by everybody, Trevor
